No, he really isn't a neo-con. More like a con-con. He is dyed-in-the-wool
(Goldwater campaign) and atypical in his background. He is from Maryland and
not a rich family and Lutheran. Went to Yale ('70) and Yale Law, then big name
D.C. law firm (Covington and Burling). Apparently did useful work fighting
voting rights cases for the Republicans in the South and then became a protege
of Jessie Helms. The rest is history.
There was a time when I thought there was a clear distinction between the
neo-cons and the others, at least meaningful in terms of family background,
etc. I kept thinking that would show itself. I am not so sure anymore.
