I just bought a nifty TV tuner card (Hauppage, 150 PVR) ($80) for the
Univac. Plug a cable box into that baby and you can record all you
like. Get a DVD burner and you can make your own copies, play 'em on a
$30 DVD player hooked up to the teevee. I haven't tried to duplicate a
commercial DVD yet, cuz that would be wrong. Ditto immoral downloading
of movies over a fast broadband connection.
boy, your mom must be proud of you ;-). you'll still need the tv
schedule. there are DVRs that provide a free 3-day guide. there's
freevo, that lets you convert your PC with a tuner card, into a tivo.
tivo is almost always cheaper, by my calculation, for the services it
provides.
I believe there are set-top boxes sold over the Internets that do what
TIVO does, with no subscription fee. I'm not sure if you can record
directly off a cable feed with a DVD recorder.

The price of a TIVO, the TV recording device, has just been dropped to
$49.99.
I understand that a TIVO is, a heart, a digital hard drive. Could it be
adopted to be a computer hard drive? If so, wouldn't fifty bucks be a
bargain price for that capacity?
yes on the first. no on the second. if the tivo is a refurb, and a 80GB
HDD, you could get one for the same price or a bit cheaper. max is right
about where the money is for tivo, of corse. (the service).
