now that I think about it, this kind of metaphor is very common in Marx & Engels. In the MANIFESTO, they talk about economic crises revealing the socialized nature of production (including class relations). In CAPITAL, volume III, financial crises reveal all of the swindles that had been hid by the previous bull market.
