it used to be there was uneven development between the vaguely
social-democratic North, with industry, industrial unions, liberal
state governments, etc. and the yukky South. Now, there's downward
harmonization going on.

Good point, but you can go back further than that. The roots of the "red
state" miasma go back to the end of Reconstruction when the Northern
bourgeoisie cut a deal with the Southern planters over the need to defend
property against the unruly mob, both North and South.
