The last 3 places I've rented had natural gas heating and we never turned 
it on... The General consensus is sweatshirts are a much cheaper source of 
home heating. The "middling class" has a lot of learning to do on their spiral
in to "working poor, but don't acknowledge it".

Adbusters ran a piece of graffitti as image a while back, it said:

"I'd rather our boys die in the desert than I should turn down my thermostat & 
drive less." 

Cold(sic) but true underpinnings of the average American's 
subconscious thought process in regard to energy issues.
