for awhile now, I've thought that Los Angeles should sell naming

I learned the word "boondoggle" as a child when I read it in the Los
Angeles Herald Express. It was a reference to the lining of the L.A.
River with concrete. In the late 1960s I suggested in a letter to the
editor of the L.A. Times that the L.A. River should be dammed at the
outlet and Angelenos could sail to work on little boats. Nobody
bought it. It's still used, I believe, primarily for unauthorized
teenage drag races and cinema chase scenes.
