Steve Roberts, as a young NYTimes reporter in the fall of 1971, did a
NYTMag story on the communes and collectives in Berkeley, including houses
peopled by among others Bob Scheer, Tom Hayden, Dan Siegel, Barbara Dudley,
Doren Weinberg. The story was virtually free of editorializing, letting the
participants tell their story and setting the scene in the communes and
free clinic, etc., about as fairly as could be expected. Steve Roberts had
been an undergraduate classmate of Dan Siegel at Hamilton, and he seemed to
have the latitude and understanding in writing the story to preserve that
friendship. Of course, the politics at that time and place included a lot
of emphasis on lifestyle, but he fairly described the more radical aspects
as well. One of the houses, The Red Fox Collective, was owned by me, and
with a mortgage of only $250 a month, we were all, the nine housemates,
able to live on a budget per month for food and lodging of $65 each. I
remember someone saying that the dinner hour was like a football training
table, and that when we slept, the whole building shook with the energy of
our collective breathing.
