Post: "Most reporters ... publish or broadcast most of their stories as
events unfold. Under Woodward's unusual relationship with The Post, he stays
on the payroll while mainly writing books from his Georgetown home, with the
paper carrying excerpts -- and providing a publicity boost -- upon
publication. This has sparked some resentment among the staff."

Pen-l'ers should look forward to an article I am working on for swans. It
will examine the career of Bob Woodward and the Washington Post in general
with an eye to debunking the fearless investigative reporter mythology,
which was not even true during the Watergate period. I am basing this on
Debra Davis's "Katherine the Great", a bio of the Post's owner and "Deep
Truth" by Adrian Havill, which is a joint bio of Woodward and Bernstein.
Davis's book had two publishers. The first trashed 20,000 copies of the
book under pressure from Ben Bradlee. You'll see why before long.
