I'm afraid Asians are too focused on academics.  Fierce
anti-affirmative action protests (student demos, doctors' strikes,
etc.) in India show what they feel is at stake.

The only Japanese athlete who did well at the winter Olympics this
year was Shizuka Arakawa, the gold medalist in figure skating, whose
will to power was visually concealed by her poise and elegance but
expressed through the music to which she skated: an aria from
Turandot, "Nessun dorma," which has the Prince sing, "Vanish, o night!
Set, stars! At dawn, I will win!"  Musical gender-bending!
