I'm afraid Asians are too focused on academics. Fierce anti-affirmative action protests (student demos, doctors' strikes, etc.) in India show what they feel is at stake. The only Japanese athlete who did well at the winter Olympics this year was Shizuka Arakawa, the gold medalist in figure skating, whose will to power was visually concealed by her poise and elegance but expressed through the music to which she skated: an aria from Turandot, "Nessun dorma," which has the Prince sing, "Vanish, o night! Set, stars! At dawn, I will win!" Musical gender-bending! -- Yoshie <http://montages.blogspot.com/> <http://mrzine.org> <http://monthlyreview.org/>
