For the same reason that human beings have engaged in breeding and cross-breeding before the invention of GM? I'm not saying that you (or anyone else) _should_ want to have GM done, though. It's just that GM has already been and is being done here in the USA, and we've already been eating tons of GM foods. The way to go seems to me to make an argument that would make it easier for us to take a first step toward regulating it.
