I'm a Western leftist (of an admittedly rather odd sort) and surely the

they kill people, in their hundreds of thousands, for no good purpose

After Iraq, they will think that for a while (I hope), just as they
did after Vietnam, but that's not always true: e.g., East Timor,
Yugoslavia, etc. Deaths resulted, but not so many as to make people
think twice about the next invasion.

IMHO, even Saddam Hussein's government provided things to Iraqis that
were worth defending. Even more so in the case of what the Iranian
government provides for Iranians. But listening to what Western
leftists, who all enjoy the benefits of living under functioning
governments that provide them with many things on which they depend,
one gets an impression that what functioning governments in the rest
of the world (with possible exceptions of Cuba and Venezuela depending
on what kind of leftists they are) provide to their respective
citizens are basically less than nothing and are not worth defending
at all.

Western leftists, however, are not in a position to provide to the
rest of the world what their functioning governments provide, some
well, some badly, in the event they get destroyed by Western
invasions, economic sanctions, and so forth.
