Yes. How could there be any solidarity on Carrol's immediate self-
interest principle? It sounds a little like Emerson's icy disavowal,
"Are they my poor?" I prefer the Old Man's favorite, "nothing human
is alien to me."
Carrol, who always criticizes generalizations about "leftists" or any
other population, gives Yoshie a free pass. Few "male leftists" - a
curious phrase, since bourgeois feminists are most likely to get
exercised over the abuses of women in Iran, Afghanistan, Saudi
Arabia, etc. - said all that much about Iranian gender relations
until she started running her apologias for the regime.
