$40b sounds about right.  Some of it goes through the Dept of Energy.

I just quoted an article in a letter to the editor of
a local paper that claimed that the US spent 40
billion a year maintaining,modernising, etc its
nuclear capacity. I thought this must be too high but
then I checked the US yearly military expenditure. It
is 518 billion in 2005!
