I recall a conversation with an economist from Stanford who told me that their was no way one of our best students could ever get into Stanford -- no matter how qualified. I just spent quite a bit of time in the last two days talking with two of these students who deserve better. Both are quite stressed about their prospects. Some exceptional students do get accepted without athletic scholarships. Many are snuffed out by poverty before they graduate high school.
