More Poor in US Suburbs

Washington, Dec 7 (Prensa Latina) More than 12 million US residents in
suburban areas live in terrible conditions of poverty, outnumbering those who survive in similar conditions in cities, reveals a Brookings Institute
study released Thursday.

According to the report, the populations on the outskirts of major cities are growing faster than those in metropolitan areas. While the proportion
of poor in major cities is greater than in the suburbs, on a national
level, suburban poor outnumber their city cousins.

The study mentions that a great number of immigrants have chosen to live in
such areas, mainly in the South and Eastern United States.

In 1999 the number of estimated poor people in metropolitan and suburban
areas was very close, about 10.3 million each.

However by 2005, the disparity has grown with 1.2 million more living on
the outskirts of cities.

According to National Urban League President Marc Morial, the social and economic problems that for years have affected US cities now are hitting
the suburbs: violence in schools, rise in crime and poorly paid jobs.
