Speaking of peak oil, I went to a talk recently by Mathew Simmons
author of "Twilight in the Desert". He manage to attract a large
audience but there were a few skeptical questions about the recent
(downward) trend in crude prices. Simmons had no good explanation. To
him, any peak-oil skeptic is either biased or "full of it".

He also talked about how trucks far more than cars are massive
consumers of gasoline and blamed it on the globalized economy.

Interestingly there was no mention of environmental issues and of the
role of financial speculators in the oil market - which is perhaps not
surprising because his company markets itself as the "investment
bankers for the energy industry". Fascinating stuff.
