I have always thought of this as extremely powerful (though
unintended) critique of capitalism. The whole point of the book is
that there are all these things that could be more sustainable that
are also cheaper (even in the narrow market price sense) than what we
are doing now. That is one hell of a criticism of capitalism: it can't
even do all th e socially useful things that would be profitable to
major capitalists!
