of course, Mencken was anti-Semitic, too, as evidenced by his diaries.

but it's a mistake to take these too far: after all, anti-Semitism was
the _norm_ in the US during the period before WW2. People hadn't met
Hitler yet. Both Bryan and Mencken were products of their (horrible)
times.
