he resigned because of Wilson's efforts to get into the war
(surrounding the sinking of the Lusitania).

That by itself makes him one of the true heroes of u.s. political
history. It certainly places him on a level with the various
slave-holding heroes of that history.

of course, after he visited Serbia, etc., a reporter asked Bryan how
his trip to the Balkans had been. Reportedly, he asked "where are the
Balkans?"
