Bruni, Luigino. 2006. Civil Happiness: Economics and Human
Flourishing in Historical Perspective (London: Routledge).

He says that the Aristotle tradition flourished in the first half of the 14th
C. As
tyrants began to rule the Italian city states the Renaissance began, with its
emphasis on individualism.

30: "... the individual who rose from the ashes of Civic Humanism
... in the eyes of Machiavelli and Hobbes ... was ... villainous,
uncivil, fearful, and cunning -- the modern adjectives for the
   "new" human being.".
