This summer, I've been trying to catch up with readings that I had had
to postpone for this reason or the other. Three books that stimulated
a lot of thinking were David Laibman's _Deep History: A Study in
Social Evolution and Human Potential_, Fernand Braudel's _A History of
Civilizations_, and Marta Harnecker's _La Izquierda en el umbral del
siglo XXI: Haciendo posible lo imposible_, whose English version is
available free-of-charge on the web:

Not free of charge but in English rather than Spanish is Marta's
'Rebuilding the Left' (published earlier this year by Zed Books),
which incorporates the best parts of 'The Left on the Threshold....'
(omitting the section on global capitalism) and expands the part on
the party, drawing also upon the new Venezuelan experiences since
1999. The section on the Party from the original book has been talked
about extensively by Chavez in his advocacy of the new unified
socialist party for Venezuela.
