A friend who had a pacemaker installed - a piece of electronics about the size of an iPod - told me it cost $70,000.
In 1998, my mother was visiting us from Mexico. She was talking a morning walk in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, dunked her left foot in a pothole, fell and broke her wrist into fragments. (We found out then that she had osteoporosis.) We took her to Maimonides Hospital, a few blocks away. Later, she had orthopedic surgery. The surgeon later told us he gave us a discount, because it was his first surgery ever! Fortunately, it all worked out well. Obviously, my mom had no insurance. The bills added up to a bit over 20,000 current USD. And no, we didn't sue the city.
