Can't wave solder surface mount chips the size of pinhead without
them, or the internal connections that make up the workings of that
chip. etc.

That's one example of 'difficult'. OK, most likely impossible, but
close enough for government work...

...as far as drudge work being replaced...

It's subjective... depends on what the individual asked to do the work
considers 'unpleasant'.
