Check to see if your pppd is working. at the command prompt type "pppd".
You should get some "rubbish" printed on the screen. This will happen for
about a minute then the prompt will be returned to you. If that doesn't
work than try to make sure that you have ppp installed on your system. Then
make sure that your kernel was compiled with the ppp option enabled.
Usually is on redhat. You can also check to see if ppp is started during
init. Do this (on Redhat) by typing "setup" then chose the deamons you want
to start when the system boots.
Another problem is that you may not have TCP/IP running on your system. You
can check this out by ping-ing your local hosts. Just type "ping localhost"
or "ping 127.0.0.1". Try reading the HOWTO on ppp that is on your Redhat
cd-rom its a great help.
