Sendmail is a Mail transport agent(MTA). Perhaps it is the world most
widely use and oldest MTA available. Because of its long history, Sendmail
features is well build, so far, no commercial mail system able to provide
all the features offer by sendmail
However, when compare to other Open source MTA, Sendmail suffers lots of
security flaws. Futhermore, sendmail is not easy to set up, compare to
Qmail, Lotus Notes server, MS exchange.
However, when compare to commercial mail system such as MS exchange, Lotus
Notes, sendmail just take small foot print, e.g. A 486 16MB system with
sendmail can easily serve up to 50 similtaneous user without problem. A MS
exchange server that run on P200 system with 64MB RAM can't do such things.
Qmail is an alternative to sendmail . Although qmail is much easier (as
claim by people) to setup, it is not distributed under any Linux distro
due to its licenses, which is more towards BSD.
