Assalamualaikum,
Haris petik ni daripada diskusi COMPUTERGUYS
Jan 1, 2000. Ia bermula pasal CorelLinux.
tak ?
Wassalam.

It is not missing. My floppy and printer work just fine. Linux is a very
powerful OS and can do *a lot* more right out of the box than anything
Microsoft offers. It is almost infinitely flexible. It is also designed
with security in mind. This is why the default is to only let root
access the floppy. Corel deserves an ovation for making a very complex
OS easier for the new user to install and use. I agree it is still not
as simple as windows, and I hope it never is. To quote Einstein: "Make
it as simple as possible, but no simpler." Windows is too simple. It is
only easy to use until it does something unexpected. Then it is a
virtual black box.

Linux works much better when you install it in your computer then trying
to fit the CD into various orifices that are generally deprived of the
light of day :)
In a ll seriousness, if you are happy with windows, then that is great.
But in all fairness, you should not berate things that you have not
tried. By your logic, Microsoft owes many people on this list (and the
world) a whole lot of money for a whole lot of time wasted trying to fix
the unfixable. Here is an example of why I love linux:
[root@astro /root]# more foo
6:43pm up 329 days, 23:01, 1 user, load average: 0.04, 0.01, 0.00
USER TTY FROM LOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT
root tty1 6:42pm 0.00s 0.29s 0.02s w
Astro had been running for 329 days without a reboot before I had to
move it to a different location. I hated to shut it down so I redirected
the "w" command into a file.

This is a common obstacle that new Linux users run into. Linux will not
just give anyone access to the floppy drive (at least the default
setings for most distros). Linux also does not automatically mount the
floppy filesystem either(It can be configured to do this using automount
though). These are this way for security reasons. There are a couple of
ways around this:
1) Most distros come with the "mtools". Try typing
man mtools
to learn about them. They are basically DOS commands with a "m" prefix.
If this does not work, then you should install them. I would imagine
that Corel would have them installed, however. So with this method, it
is a 2 step process. Save all your emails to your hard drive and then
use the mtools to copy them to floppy. Suppose you save the message in
/home/sylvie/foo.txt. Then copy it to the floppy like so:
mcopy /home/sylvie/foo.txt a:
Note the emulation of drive letters here. To verify that it worked,
mdir a:
If you want to delete a:\foo.txt
mdel a:\foo.txt
2) The second way is harder. You have to mount the floppy, and then you
may access it just like another directory. If Corel is just like all
other Linuxes I've worked with, then you should be able to mount a MSDOS
floppy like this
mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
Anyway, this is
mount -t filesystemtype device directory
More on this can be had by typing
man mount
Since Linux does not use drive letters, everything appears as one
filesystem to the user. Before the above command is issued, the mount
point, /mnt/floppy, is just an empty directory (also, it can be any
directory. You do not have to use /mnt/floppy). Afterwards, it will
contain the contents of the floppy and appear to just be part of the
filesystem. The mounting and unmounting information can generally be
found in the file /etc/fstab. If the machine says something like "only
root can do that" then you can either mount the floppy as root or you
can edit /etc/fstab and give the floppy (and maybe the cdrom drive too)
user mountable permission. There is probably some sort of grapical tool
to do this. I would check the manual here.

Have you tried printing from Netscape? Make sure you are not printing to
a file.
