Greetings, and welcome to the first edition of the CNET Linux
Dispatch. My name is Todd, and I'll be your guide today as we
take a look at the conglomeration of resources that is the
recently launched CNET Linux Center. Please keep your hands and
arms inside the vehicle at all times.
In all seriousness, though, putting together a central hub of
information about the Linux OS is no small task. It's taken the
collective effort of many bright and talented folks here to get
the center up and running, and the task is far from over. In
fact, you can expect to see a continual flow of improvements in
the months to follow, as we define and redefine how best to
serve your needs while providing a unique valuable perspective
on the past, present, and future of this open source
wunderkind. But before I wax poetic, let's take a closer look
at the many features of the Linux Center. I think you'll find
it has something to offer for Linux newcomers and self-
appointed open source gurus alike.

1. Linux Metasearch
On your first visit to the Linux Center, one of the first
things you're likely to notice is a search box near the top
of the page. This is no ordinary Web search engine, folks--
this is our Linux Metasearch engine, developed expressly for
the CNET Linux Center. Not that I'm partial, but this is one
fantastic tool for both newbies and veterans. Via radio
buttons near the search box, you can tailor your searches to
maximize useful returns in four areas: News, Software,
Documentation, and Security. And the sites covered by the
search engine include not only CNET Linux resources, but
also other well-known Linux sites such as Slashdot and
freshmeat. For example, a search on the term "ppp" (a
networking protocol) under the Documentation subheading
might return results from the CNET Help Center, as well as
from the Linux Documentation Project, Linuxcare, or the
ubiquitous "man pages" that no self-respecting Linux user
would do without. Extrapolate this flexibility into software
downloads, support, and security issues, and you'll begin to
see what a marvelous tool we have for you.

2. Today in CNET's Linux Center
Linux is malleable and constantly evolving. To get a handle
on it, you've got to stay on top of late-breaking
developments in the field, and that's what this section of
the Linux Center is all about. Drawing from one of the most
respected voices in technology news, CNET News.com, we
populate this area with the top headlines about Linux,
nearly as soon as developments happen. If you really want to
stay informed (and impress your friends with your prescient
knowledge of the industry), check out this section on a
regular basis.

3. Trend Watch, Linux Downloads, Reviews, Stocks
If you want a quick (and often opinionated) peek at what's
moving and shaking in the world of Linux, look no further
than the Linux Trend Watch section, penned by yours truly.
My pet penguin and I loom auspiciously above my words of
wisdom--you can't miss it. Also featured in this area is a
list of Top Linux Downloads from one of the most popular
sites on the Net for downloadable freeware and shareware,
CNET's Download.com. You'll also find links to CNET's latest
Linux software reviews, as well as a quote "snapshot" of the

Lastly, the Linux Help section culls the most popular
discussion threads from our extensive Linux Help Center for
your immediate perusal. So if you're having a Linux-related
problem, you can jump right into the discussion and find
some answers, or even share your own knowledge if you've
already figured out a solution. Of course, if your issue
isn't listed in an existing Help Center discussion thread,
you can dive in and start your very own discussion. Linux
problem- solving has never been so convenient!
