Female singers may be allowed
KOTA BARU: Buoyed by the success of the Mawi concert here, PAS has indicated that it may consider allowing female artistes to perform in the state.
Using the concert as example, PAS exco member Takiyuddin Hassan said there was a time when such concerts were not allowed in the state.
I presume that in the near future we might consider allowing female singers with conditions attached, said Takiyuddin, who was instrumental in bringing Mawi to the state a move which seemed to mark a shift in its policy.
This is the first time that a PAS leader has come out to voice the possibility that female singers might someday be allowed to hold a concert in PAS-led Kelantan.
Takiyuddins comments are bound to raise eyebrows even within his own party as there are differences in opinion in its ranks in allowing the hugely-popular Mawi, a male singer and a product of Akademi Fantasia 3, to perform.
PAS deputy president Nasharuddin Mat Isa said there was no dispute in allowing concerts by artistes such as Mawi or M. Nasir but some leaders had different opinions.
It was reported that Dewan Ulama head Datuk Harun Taib supported the concert but not the presence of Mawi, a product of the Akademi Fantasia reality show series which PAS had earlier criticised as not suitable within the Islamic context.
I am not answerable to them. They (Dewan Ulama) are answerable to the CWC (central committee).
Whatever the differences should be reported back to CWC, our highest authority, Nasharuddin told a press conference when asked why the ulama generally boycotted the concert.
Present were Mawi, M. Nasir and Takiyuddin.
Nasharuddin said he saw no reason why international acts with dakwah (preaching) genre songs could not be invited to perform in Kelantan.
Anybody is welcomed but they must meet the states entertainment control enactment and obtain approval from the local authorities.
On president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang's absence at the concert, Nasharuddin said Hadi endorsed the concert but could not attend due to a prior engagement in Perlis.
Takiyuddin pointed out that when PAS came into power in 1990 it totally banned the wayang kulit because of its un-Islamic elements.
But now, we allow a new version of the wayang kulit in the state. This was put together by the Dewan Bahasa & Pustaka and does not contain the mentera, jampi and tahyul (supernatural) elements.
We use the same musical instruments but the storyline and characters are different. It is the wayang kulit concept in a new version.
So maybe we can also have a new version of female singers, he said after the celebrations of the declaration of Kota Baru as an Islamic City yesterday. //Thestar 3 Oct

Kelantan Tetap Tidak Buka Pintu Pada Artis Wanita
