OF THE 95 water distribution tanks in Kelantan, only 56 are functioning with the remaining 39 damaged since 1996 and not repaired.

According to the Auditor General's report, the concessionaires had been informed of the damage and asked to repair the tanks, but no attention had been given.

The report said since water could not be stored in the damaged tanks, supply could not meet the public's growing demand and immediate action should be taken to rectify the problem.

Apart from this, water intake areas were found to be poorly secured and maintenance was unsatisfactory.

Some water intake areas were covered by bushes, were filthy and had no gates, while others had pumps which were no longer functioning.

In the Sungai Kerila intake area, liquor bottles were found although the area was supposed to be restricted.

At water treatment plants, filters for untreated water from rivers had not been cleaned for over a year although they were supposed to be cleaned at least once a month.

These included plants in Kampung Tualang, Kuala Krai, Stong, Air Lanas, Jeli, Kuala Betis and Gua Musang.

Up to 10 treatment plants did not filter the treated water properly as many of the filters had been damaged and could no longer function.

Some, including the Bukit Remah treatment plant, were filled with mud.//Thestar 12 Oct
