Kelantan to hold lullaby contest
KOTA BARU: With a view to strengthening the family institution, the PAS-led
Kelantan government is holding a statewide contest to find the mother who can
best serenade her infant and husband with a lullaby. State Women
Committee chairman Abdul Patah Mahmood said the contest, believed to be the
first of its kind in the country, was the brainchild of Mentri Besar Datuk Nik
Abdul Aziz Nik Mat. He added that it was part of the states commitment
to forming a healthy and harmonious family institution with religious elements.
It shows that the family comes first in the lives of everyone here, he
said after the weekly state exco meeting yesterday. According to Patah,
Kelantan wants to foster a culture where singing can be used to preserve
harmony and promote a sense of togetherness among family members. The
contest is aimed at helping young parents cope with the negative effects of
globalisation, which include less time spent together with both
spouses working, and the advent of music videos. He said it was also
directed at improving the mothering skills of young women to ensure that their
children would grow up strong, both mentally and spiritually. To date, 42
couples from all walks of life have submitted their entry forms for the
contest. Each couple must submit their own song, and their performance
will be evaluated by a panel of judges. The preliminary rounds will begin soon,
with 10 couples to be selected for the finals on Dec 23. Judging will be
based on the message behind the song, its lyrics, originality in stage
presentation and creativity, with the top three winners to receive RM3,000,
RM2,000 and RM1,000 respectively.//Thestar
