Hello all

I was wondering if anyone has any kind of measurements on how to set up your disks for Random I/O ops, since I have no way of making real measurements between identical systems.

The thing is, the LUNs we get from an EMC symmetrix (yes, I know, awfull for performance but it's what we have and can't get away from it) come in 100GB sizes but, several times we have to set up a few of those LUNs using some volume manager (SDS/LVM, VxVM or, soon, ZFS).

Some people here claim that it's best to do a concat since it's easier to grow (true) and there is no performance penalty since all of those disks are actually LUNs from the same EMC box but, that goes against everything I ever did.

Things like DTrace toolkit seem to support my claim that stripe is always best (we do not have a bottleneck on the fibre channel) but, since I don't have the same machine to test both scenarios, I'd like to ask if anyone ever tested something like this.

Thanks
