Patch applied.
I dropped the modifications to perf_examples/Makefile.

I also improved self_count.c so it would compile for non-x86. I don't know
if perf_events for Power does enable user level read of the counters. I think
there is an instruction to do this. Once this is enabled in perf_events, then
you should be able to easily update self_count.c.
