1. perfmon was discontinued but you can use libpfm.
2 - libpfm provide examples to do system wide monitoring
3 - if you insist on using perf you can combine with sleep command line to
do system wide monitoring for a period of time.
4 - if you do not know the period of time just create a simple program that
hangs (using wait) and send a sigterm to end as needed. Perhaps there
already has an utility to do it but I am not aware.
5 - libpfm has much more events than perf, to find the performance counters
list see bkdg for amd processor and programer's guide for intel.
