What does the ouptut of /proc/cpu infor look like? is there an "ht" on the flags line? Does the number of processors agree with how the machine is configured.
I don't have access to the machine right now but I'll check as soon as I get a chance this evening.
Could the test for HT be confusing multicore processors with hyperthreaded processors, e.g. see more than one processor in the package assume HT.
You read my mind... I was just looking at this intel article <http://www.intel.com/cd/ids/developer/asmo-na/eng/200678.htm?page=3> which warns that the previous method for detecting HT breaks with the introduction of multi-core systems and describes another procedure for detecting HT which will work on both single-core and multi-core systems.
