And it turns out the documentation is in the "Intel 64 and ia-32 architectures software developer's manual" volume 3b, appendix A (in case someone else wants to look at this stuff at some point and doesn't want to waste half an hour trying to find any useful documentation on the intel site like I did). I'll see what I can do about getting a patch together. It's a shame I don't have any Pentium Pro or Pentium machines around to test on, this PII machine I use as my desktop is the oldest machine my department seems to have.
