No defence required. As I recall, the charter of this list says something about using Perl for genealogical purposes. We're not limited to my module. We're not even limited to GEDCOM. We should probably stay reasonably close to Perl though. At least for the majority of the threads. There is a large number of very bright people on this list. Many of us are facing similar problems. I'm always happy to hear of how others have approached matters, of what has worked and what hasn't, and why. So if you have any interesting software to show, questions, anecdotes, tips or just thoughts that could be interesting to the subscribers of this list, please feel free to post. Perl mailing lists, IRC channels, conferences and so forth have a long tradition of tolerating and even encouraging diversity, just like the language itself. I suspect that most people who use Perl do so because they think it is the best tool for the job, using whatever definition of "best" seems appropriate at the time. But the important thing is the job, not the tool. I find that I learn some of the most important and interesting things I know from parenthetical discussions in ostensibly Perl orientated fora. Long may that continue. We are a pretty low volume list, with discussion generally coming in short bursts. But we also have a fair number of subscribers. I don't know the exact number off hand, but it's somewhere in between the two numbers previously mentioned. So, yes, we should be mindful that what we write is using a reasonable amount of our collective resources. But on the other hand, we're subscribed because we are interested what goes on here. I am now mindful that this message is far longer and much more rambling than I had originally intended, so I'll conclude by mentioning that I'll be sure to say something if I think discussion is moving too far from the charter of this list, and by apologising for having nothing of a technical nature to add to this thread. -- Paul Johnson - [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pjcj.net
