hm - works fine for a while but then the inet_aton() gets wrong input. I have 
s.th. like a 

$buffer=shift(@packet_array) 
if (defined($buffer)) { 
  ($address, $newmsg)  = split ("::", $buffer)
   ... inet_aton($address) ...
...

looks like I'm getting s.th. off the array, which isn't what I expect :-( But 
besides that - doesn't improve the performance very much. Anyway, good to 
hear, that you could at least confirm the memory leackage :-)
I'm trying with shared mem now - what's your opinion? Is it likely to be 
faster than shared data?
