In that page of the documentation the square brackets indicate the list is optional; with no list the method sorts by DN.

The style we've used on the main Net::LDAP pod uses a separate entry for the no-arguments case. If we wanted to stick with that style, we'd change the Net::LDAP::Search pod to something like:
