Don't put the evaluation statement inside quotes:
printf $entry->get_value( 'preferredName' )."$field\n";
should do.
Returns an empty value, even though I can see (with additional debugging info turned on and comparing to an LDIF file) that those people *DO* have a preferred name.
If this is fixed it hould work.
