Ick! Another one! AFAICT, Perl's locale does not recognize UTF multibyte characters, as I discovered with ja_JP.UTF-8 (which has a UTF representation for Yen if I am not very much mistaken). I think I am going to have to punt on that one, since I have no way of knowing whether something _should_ have been UTF encoded or not just by examining the byte string, do I?
