I have two primary rules: 1) Don't make an estimate for something I haven't done before. 2) Don't make an estimate for anything that'll take longer than two or three days. If it's a much bigger project, break it into small, estimable pieces, but don't go over a couple of weeks for estimates. Could I give longer estimates? Yes, but they will be rough guesses and they won't be as accurate. What happens when I need to estimate something I haven't done before? I take an afternoon to play with it to have some evidence for what the real job will take. -- c
