"Got" is the simple past of "to get". Informally it's often used as the past tense of "to have" -- as in Test::More diagnostics. While it's not exactly on par with slang, the "got/expected" pair is an informal/formal combination and just reads strangely as a result. Compare: She got an idea. (possibly correct, but informal and reads poorly) She had an idea. (correct and reads much better) As for "received/expected", I really like it because it reads very nicely (the verbs aren't quite the opposite of each other, but I still like 'em).
