That's why I use Winvi32.  It will allow them to use windows commands and vi
commands.  And it saves as you tell it to, unlike notepad.

I understand the issue with students not familiar with UNIX, so I can
understand not showing them this.  However, there are also other windows
editors that will be useful in class.  Super NoteTab (has great macro
capability) and TextPad are some examples.  Basically Notepad on Jolt!!!

I personally don't mind them knowing I don't like Windows, but my teaching
environment allows this prejudice.  I guess I am lucky...

        One problem I've encountered with students writing their files with
        Notepad is that if you so "File / Save" and enter "hello.pl" it will
        actually create a file called "hello.pl.txt"!  To fix, tell them to
        enter the double quotes around the filename in the "Save" dialog
box.
