UTF8 string operations has been seriously tweaked and speeded-up during 5.8.1 development -- I have seen order-of-magnitude speedup in my production systems simply by upgrading to maintperl, especially when using regexes. Maybe you can upgrade to one of the 5.8.1-tobe snapshots (e.g. http://www.iki.fi/jhi/[EMAIL PROTECTED]) and see if it improves things for you? Thanks, /Autrijus/
