My linux web host is incredibly slow in upgrading their packages. As a
result, I am trying to install a private, more current version of perl
(they're running 5.004). Install the latest version resulted in
Segmentation Faults any time you attempted to run perl. There would be
no output, no entry into the interpreter, ... just an immediate
Segmentation Fault.

Now, I've moved back to version 5.6.0 build 615. Invoking perl alone
will start the interpreter which is then capable of handling some simple
commands. However, any require or use command results in an immediate
Segmentation Fault. So, for instance, you cannot run ppm as it uses
Getopt::Long among other modules.

Any idea what I might do to correct this problem? Or, does anyone have
definite steps that will work for installing a private perl? OR, does
anyone have suggestions on what I might do to ascertain the root of the
problem?

The uname output on the box is:
Linux amarron.propagation.net 2.0.36 #5 Wed Dec 16 18:09:02 CST 1998
i686 unknown

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Chris
