I use Vim for my editing - I don't use an IDE.  I would recommend either
emacs or vim for the following reasons:  1) both are free; 2) both are multi-platform;
3) both are powereful; 4) vim is less powerful, a little more efficient and a little
easier to learn; 5) emacs is more powerful, a little less efficient and a little harder
to learn.
