Hi guys
I could do with a few suggestions if anybody has a couple of minutes. I've written a perl script to perform centralised event logging. It runs on a central server and uses Win32::Eventlog to query the remote logs on Windows 2000 servers. It all works pretty much fine with a couple of exceptions. (running on Windows 2k Server SP2, perl 5.8) 1. Using Win32::EventLog I am unable to retrieve Message texts from the FRS, DNS or DS event logs. I get all info fine including the insertion strings, just no message text(and the script runs on a Windows 2k DC that has all of these types of logs locally). 2. To get around the above, when I find I retrieve a null message string in any log I swop to using Win32::Lanman to retrieve the message text for that specific event - which works perfectly! The downside to the above is speed - Win32:: EventLog is pretty quick at retrieving the info(because I assume that it looks up the message strings locally?), but my script slows down significantly because I have to run Win32::Lanman to retrieve message texts for the DS/DNS/FRS logs. When you add this to the fact its pulling info across a network the delay becomes a problem. Dont get me wrong - the LanMan module is fab and I wouldnt be able to do a lot of things without it. I'd be interested to hear from anybody who has managed to get Win32::EventLog to retrieve message strrings for the above logs or might be able to suggest a quick hack or alternative?(again, for the standard logs I have no problem, just the "extra" logs typically found on servers) Maybe a future version of it will support these logs? ( or maybe I'm just thick? ) As always, any help / wisdom gratefully received :-) Kind Regards Ross GWR on the Web http://www.musicradio.com http://www.classicfm.com http://www.corefreshhits.com http://www.planetrock.com http://www.opusonline.co.uk http://www.gwrgroup.com CONFIDENTIALITY NOTICE *************************************************************************** The information in this e-mail and any attachments to it is confidential and may be legally privileged or prohibited from disclosure and unauthorised use.
