Hi,

This is a non-authoritative reply based more on my experience working with
mail-list
software in general. I am only guessing on that experience, since I do not know
the details
of how the ActiveStates lists are set up. However, before I delve into the
specifics of your
request, I want to remind all our readers that the mailing lists have
auto-responders to
certain commands sent to the list. To see what cammands are available, simply
send a mail
message to something like "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" (for example, the "perl-
win32-admin" would be "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"), which has
two lines; "help" which requests help instructions, and "end" which tells the
list not to
process anything further (such as automatic signatures added to your mail, etc.)

Anyhow, back to the subject at hand.. Any failures of mail *you* send to the
list are not
material. The list generally doesn't get those, only you do--And you can
respond to those
intelligently as a human, unlike the list which can only process according to
re-defined rule
sets. So, from what you describe, the automatic suppression ("de-activing" you
from the list)
is not from your mail to list bouncing, but rather, mail from the list to you
bouncing. In effect,
if the mailing list software gets more than "x" number of failures to deliver
mail to you
("bounces"), then it can only assume that your email address may no longer be
in service,
and it would be fruitless to continue trying to send you email.

Your best bet is to re-subscribe from scratch if you cannot simply re-enable
your email
address on the list (see what the help command, described above, can tell you
in that
regard..) If you do, it would be a good idea to *permanently* save the
subscription email
(and always do so for any mailing lists--I keep a mail sub-folder specifically
for that kind of
thing, which also reminds me what lists I'm on, helps me re-build my spam
filters if needed,
and alerts me to anything unusual happening, etc), since they often contain
helpful tips on
maintaining your list membership and other issues.

To the ActiveState list admins: I should note that when I originally signed up
for several
ActiveState lists, the confirmation code sent to me was invalid. I had to go
thru some extra
work just to get subscribed (and some I still am not able to subscribe to.. I
had set the mail
aside at the time to alert the admins of a problem, but other things got in the
way and it
slipped my mind until I got Mr Richcreek's post.) It would seem there is a bug
in the setup
(or the listserv software) that is generating invalid confirmation codes, or is
not able to
confirm those that are generated.

Regards,
C. M.
