I can confirm that I get the same behaviour under Win98:
AP 5.6.1 has a green background
AP 5.8.7 has a grey background

Just tried this under 5.8.6 and the window is gray.
Under 5.6 the window is green.
Both on xp SP2, and the latest Win32::GUI from the source.
