I have been using Perl5.00503 up till this week. Now the project requires a
move to Perl5.6.1. I am working on W2K well spec'd PC. I immediately
noticed an extreme change in behavior between the two releases. To read in
a large (140k +) text file and write to another file takes noticeably
longer in 5.61 than before. To take the same text file and display in a
Perl/Tk text widget practically brings the PC to a screeching halt.

Both these ops are simple and basic. Would someone please point me to the
reason behind this drastic change in performance/behavior between the releases?

I noticed that the CPU usage jumps up to and remains at 100% during the
program run.

Thanks,

Lawrence.
